Miami team suffered a tough 68-64 loss to Virginia Tech (10-6, 1-2) on Sunday afternoon, despite leading for over 32 minutes of the game. The Hurricanes (11-4, 1-3) held a 12-point advantage in the fourth quarter but were undone by a 21-5 Hokies run to close the contest.
Miami showcased a balanced offense with six players scoring five or more points, including three reaching double figures. The team shot 44.6% from the field and 81.8% from the free-throw line, while limiting Virginia Tech to 38.2% shooting overall. However, the Hokies excelled from beyond the arc, converting 37.9% of their three-point attempts.
Cameron Williams led the Hurricanes with a double-double, tallying 15 points and 10 rebounds. Jasmyne Roberts added 13 points, while Haley Cavinder contributed 12 points, six rebounds, and a game-high six assists. Hanna Cavinder chipped in nine points, and freshman Leah Harmon provided six points off the bench.
The Hurricanes started strong, jumping to a 6-0 lead by hitting three of their first four shots. The Hokies responded, and the teams ended the first quarter with Virginia Tech holding a narrow 16-15 lead. A tightly contested second quarter saw the teams head into halftime tied at 28.
Miami dominated early in the third quarter, opening with a 14-2 run to establish a 42-30 lead. The Hurricanes carried a seven-point edge into the final period. They extended their advantage to 59-47 with 7:36 remaining, but Virginia Tech rallied late. The Hokies took a one-point lead with just over a minute left. Miami tied the game with a free throw but could not capitalize further, as Virginia Tech sealed the win with clutch free throws in the final seconds.
The Hurricanes will look to bounce back next Sunday, January 12, when they travel to Syracuse to face The Orange at 6 p.m.
