What a week it has been for the Virginia Tech Hokies. The excitement began on Monday when three players revealed their plans to transfer to the program. By the end of the week, two more commitments came through, and on Friday, the Hokies secured an experienced and skilled wide receiver. Wake Forest’s Donavon Greene took to Instagram to announce his decision to join Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Donavon Greene was a highly regarded four-star recruit out of Mount Airy High School in Mount Airy, North Carolina, in 2019. At the time, he was among the most highly ranked players to sign with Wake Forest. After redshirting his freshman year, Greene made an impact in 2020, starting all eight games and recording 29 catches for 582 yards (20.1 YPR) and two touchdowns.
Unfortunately, injuries sidelined Greene for the entire 2021 and 2023 seasons. However, he bounced back in 2022 with 37 receptions for 642 yards (17.4 YPR) and six touchdowns. In 2024, he added 23 catches for 380 yards (16.5 YPR) and three touchdowns. Despite his injury setbacks, Greene has consistently performed well when healthy, showcasing his impressive size and speed. He is expected to step into Virginia Tech’s starting lineup in 2025, filling a critical need as the Hokies face significant turnover at wide receiver. Key contributors like Jaylin Lane, Da’Quan Felton, Ali Jennings, and Stephen Gosnell are heading to the NFL draft, while Xayvion Turner-Bradshaw and Chance Fitzgerald have transferred.
The Hokies do have promising young talent, including rising junior Ayden Green and freshmen Brodie Adams and Chanz Wiggins. Additionally, they signed top recruit Snook Peterkin, who is expected to make an impact in 2025. Another notable addition is Cameron Seldon, the top-ranked player from Virginia in the transfer portal. Seldon, who is versatile enough to play wide receiver or line up in the backfield, will add further depth and skill to the team. Greene brings valuable experience and, if he stays healthy, could be a significant contributor for the Hokies next season.
Interestingly, Greene shares a connection with current Hokies RB Tyler Mason and DE Deric Dandy, as all three hail from Mount Airy High School. Located just an hour and a half from Blacksburg, Mount Airy has been a fruitful recruiting ground for Virginia Tech. Greene is the 17th transfer portal addition for the Hokies and the sixth player added this week.
Welcome home, Donavon!
