Masyn Winn established himself as the St. Louis Cardinals’ shortstop for both the present and the future during the 2024 season. Now, as he looks to build on his success, he has set an ambitious goal for 2025.
Winn aims to steal at least 30 bases next season and has been training with a track coach in Jupiter, Florida, to make that goal a reality, according to John Denton of MLB.com.
“I didn’t steal as many bases as I wanted last year,” Winn admitted. “I want to get 30-40 stolen bases, if possible.”
In 2024, Winn played 150 games, batting .267 with 15 home runs, 57 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases. Although his stolen base total tied him for second on the team, he’s determined to improve. His home run tally ranked fifth, but with Paul Goldschmidt already gone and Nolan Arenado potentially leaving soon, Winn’s offensive role is expected to grow in 2025. If he can put everything together, he has the potential to achieve a 20/20 season.
Masyn Winn’s minor league career demonstrates he has the speed to significantly boost his stolen base numbers. Over three years in the minors, he swiped 92 bases, including 32 in 2021 and 43 in 2022. While his increasing power at the plate has slightly curbed his base-stealing, Winn is now determined to strike a balance between the two aspects of his game.
In 2025, Winn will take on a much larger role for the Cardinals. With Paul Goldschmidt gone and Nolan Arenado likely following, the St. Louis infield will face a major transition. After pushing through the challenges of his rookie season, Winn is now tasked with stepping up as a true leader in the infield.
As he adjusts to that leadership role, Winn is focused on further developing his game. He has already proven he can handle the demands of a full MLB season. Now, he’s aiming to establish himself as a dynamic stolen base threat at the major league level.
