BREAKING NEWS: Phillies Makes Another Groundbreaking Anouncement

This winter, the Philadelphia Phillies may add a player of a generation to the back end of their rotation.

Phillies taking a look at Max Scherzer for potential signing

Veteran pitcher Max Scherzer remains available on the free-agent market. According to Pat Ragazzo of Sports Illustrated, multiple teams have been scouting the eight-time All-Star, including the Phillies, who recently observed him during a pitching session. Philadelphia’s interest suggests they may be considering signing him from the pool of free agents.

Scherzer is nearing the end of his MLB career, but the 40-year-old still showed strong performance in 2024, posting a solid 3.95 ERA despite making just nine appearances. His 1.154 WHIP further demonstrated that he is still capable of pitching effectively at this stage of his career.

Scherzer could be a huge addition to the Phillies in 2025

As Scherzer approaches his 41st season, coming off a $12.5 million salary in 2024, he could provide valuable World Series experience to the talented Phillies roster, which currently lacks a former champion in its core aside from Joe Ross, who won in 2019.

Though Scherzer’s fastball has declined by nearly two mph over the last three seasons, now sitting at 92.5 mph, he still excels in getting batters to chase (36.4%), miss (29.2%), and limit walks (5.6%) at strong rates. While he may be nearing the end of his Major League career, the Phillies could benefit from adding his experience and reliable arm at a more affordable price.
