In a surprising turn of events, the Chicago Cubs have reportedly ended their pursuit of free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman. Despite initial interest, the Cubs’ front office, led by President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer, has decided to explore internal options for the third base position.
The Cubs had engaged in discussions with Bregman’s agent, Scott Boras, considering a short-term contract similar to the one previously offered to outfielder Cody Bellinger. However, Bregman, a two-time All-Star and recent Gold Glove recipient, is reportedly seeking a long-term deal, which the Cubs are unwilling to offer.
Bregman’s free agency has attracted interest from several teams, including the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, and Toronto Blue Jays.
