With the key additions of Jordan Romano and Joe Ross this offseason, the Philadelphia Phillies seemed to have completed most of their bullpen overhaul for the 2025 season. However, that hasn’t stopped them from bolstering their relief depth as additional insurance.
On Wednesday, the Phillies acquired right-handed sidearmer Josh Hejka from the New York Mets in exchange for cash considerations, according to Phillies Tailgate on X and Hejka’s player page. Hejka had been with the Mets organization since 2019, when he signed a minor league deal to join their Rookie League affiliate, Kingsport.

Known for his unique sidearm delivery, the 27-year-old reliever has posted solid numbers over four minor league seasons, recording a 10-7 record with a 3.73 ERA and 1.34 WHIP. Over 193 innings across 126 appearances, he has struck out 174 batters while issuing 54 walks. However, Hejka’s promising career was put on hold when he underwent Tommy John surgery, sidelining him for the entire 2023 season.
Despite successfully recovering from the procedure, his biggest challenge now isn’t his health—it’s his struggles at the Triple-A level.
Hejka has reached Triple-A three times over the past four years, but his performance has been underwhelming. In seven appearances, he has compiled a 0-1 record with a 10.13 ERA and 2.06 WHIP, surrendering 12 earned runs on 19 hits while recording just eight strikeouts and three walks over 10 2/3 innings.
The Phillies may look to take a similar approach with Hejka as they did with top pitching prospect Mick Abel, who faced his own struggles before spending time on the development list to refine his game. With some adjustments, Hejka could work his way back into form and potentially earn a spot in the Phillies’ bullpen in the near future.
