TRADE UPDATE: Giants Confirms Another Blockbuster Deal To Provide The Required Stability

The New York Giants must overhaul their offense this offseason, with their top priority being an upgrade at quarterback. While they could pursue a highly regarded rookie, there is increasing support from both current and former players for signing a veteran first to provide stability before transitioning to a younger player.

In addition to upgrading at quarterback, the Giants must add more playmakers to complement star wide receiver Malik Nabers. One potential way to address both needs could be exploring the trade market this offseason.

The Giants were linked to Derek Carr this offseason

Giants general manager Joe Schoen emphasized after the 2024 season that he would explore all options to acquire a quarterback, including trades. One veteran signal-caller who might be available is Derek Carr of the New Orleans Saints.

ESPN’s Jordan Raanan recently linked the Giants to Derek Carr, suggesting a trade for the Saints’ quarterback could be a viable option:

“The trade avenue could also be an option,” Raanan noted. “The future of Derek Carr in New Orleans is one that could come into question. Nothing should be ruled out.”

With the Saints projected to be roughly $52 million over the salary cap, they may need to move on from high-priced contracts, and Carr could be among the cap casualties. Meanwhile, the Giants have over $43 million in cap space, making it feasible for them to absorb Carr’s contract.

Though Carr may not be a long-term solution at quarterback, he remains a capable starter. The 33-year-old threw for 2,145 yards with a 15-5 TD-INT ratio in 10 games during the 2024 season—an upgrade over the Giants’ four quarterbacks, who combined for just 15 passing touchdowns across 17 games. If acquired, Carr could serve as a bridge starter while a rookie quarterback develops behind him.

Davante Adams could be on the trade block

Adding Derek Carr would be just the first step for the Giants. Their next priority is securing another offensive playmaker, and reports suggest they are actively seeking a “significant weapon” via trade or free agency. One intriguing option could be veteran wide receiver Davante Adams.

With Aaron Rodgers’ tenure with the Jets nearing its end, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that Adams will “likely” move on as well. This could present the Giants with an opportunity to acquire the veteran receiver in a low-cost trade.

Despite being 32, Adams remains a highly productive weapon. In 2024, he recorded 85 catches for 1,063 yards and eight touchdowns in 14 games split between the Raiders and Jets. Just two seasons ago, he led the NFL with 14 touchdown receptions and earned his third consecutive first-team All-Pro selection.

The Giants are determined to add another elite playmaker alongside Malik Nabers to revitalize their offense, and trading for Adams could be a smart, high-reward move. However, they would need to restructure his contract, as his $38.3 million cap hit in 2025 is unsustainable. Fortunately, with ample future cap space, New York could extend Adams and make the finances work. If executed properly, acquiring both Carr and Adams this offseason is a realistic possibility.

Carr and Adams may want to reunite

Carr and Adams share a long-standing friendship, dating back to their college days at Fresno State, where Adams was Carr’s top receiving target. They later reunited with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022, during Adams’ All-Pro season. Both have openly expressed a desire to team up again before their NFL careers end.

During the 2024 season, Carr was asked about the possibility of playing with Adams again, saying he would “absolutely welcome” the opportunity:

“I think all 32 quarterbacks would love to play with Davante. We would welcome that,” Carr told ESPN. “I don’t know if I can get in trouble for saying that … I think everyone would love to play with Tay. I would obviously welcome playing with him again if that ever worked out in our careers.”

Adams, meanwhile, voiced frustration over the Raiders’ decision to trade Carr after just one season together, despite acquiring Adams specifically to reunite them:

“I mean, I came here to play with Derek. I can’t say I would have been here if he wasn’t here,” Adams said on The Rich Eisen Show (via A to Z Sports). “That factored in heavily for me, so it definitely took a toll on me when he left.”

With both Carr and Adams reportedly on the trade block this offseason, a reunion remains possible. The Giants, in search of both a quarterback and a playmaker, could be the team to finally bring them back together in 2025.
