The Kentucky Wildcats faced another injury setback in their 75-64 victory over Tennessee, with senior guard Lamont Butler going down after reinjuring his shoulder.
Already without Jaxson Robinson, Kentucky saw Butler exit with 8:40 remaining in the second half after diving for a loose ball. He had previously missed three games due to the same shoulder injury. Despite confusion over whether it was an elbow issue, ESPN’s Molly McGrath confirmed it was a reaggravation of his left shoulder. Butler was unable to return, finishing with six points, four assists, three rebounds, and three steals in 22 minutes.
His absence briefly allowed Tennessee to take a three-point lead before Kentucky responded with a dominant 20-6 run to close out the game.
Butler has battled injuries all season, starting with an ankle issue against Clemson that sidelined him for two games. After returning, he missed three more contests against Tennessee, Arkansas, and Ole Miss due to his shoulder.
Meanwhile, Robinson is also out with a wrist injury, which he first suffered in practice and then worsened against South Carolina. Head coach Mark Pope suggested Robinson’s absence could be long-term, though he remains hopeful both players will return this season.
Before his latest setback, Butler was averaging 12.9 points, 4.7 assists, and 2.8 rebounds per game, playing a crucial role on both ends of the floor. His defensive impact, highlighted by three steals before exiting, has been vital for Kentucky.
With Butler and Robinson sidelined, the Wildcats will lean on Koby Brea, Travis Perry, and Amari Williams to handle ball-handling duties.
For now, the priority is getting healthy before March, as Kentucky has the potential for a deep tournament run if they can return to full strength.
