According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, rival teams believe the Cardinals are looking to cut payroll and focus on developing their younger pitchers. Given Fedde’s strong performance and team-friendly contract, he could be a trade candidate before the season begins.

Erick Fedde, whom the Cardinals acquired from the White Sox in the trade that sent Tommy Edman and Michael Kopech to the Dodgers, could be on the move again. After posting a 3.72 ERA over 55 2/3 innings with St. Louis, his future with the team is uncertain as they focus on developing younger pitching talent at the MLB level.
If Fedde is dealt, young arms like Michael McGreevy and André Pallante could step into the rotation, while top prospects Tink Hence, Quinn Mathews, and Tekoah Roby may also get opportunities in the majors.
The Cardinals have made payroll reduction a priority this offseason, parting ways with Paul Goldschmidt and Andrew Kittredge, exploring a trade for Nolan Arenado, and avoiding major free-agent signings. With Fedde owed $7.5 million for one more season, St. Louis may move him to reallocate funds for future competitiveness in 2026 and beyond.
