Spencer Steer was originally set to be in the Cincinnati Reds’ starting lineup this afternoon for their game against the San Diego Padres in Goodyear. However, about 75 minutes before game time, he was scratched as the designated hitter and replaced by Jacob Hurtubise. Shortly after, Mark Sheldon of Reds.com reported that Steer, who was scheduled for a medical evaluation on his shoulder, received a cortisone injection, with no set timeline for his return.

Steer has been dealing with shoulder issues for about a year, previously describing it as an impingement. Despite playing through it last season, the condition did not improve during the offseason. Imaging showed no structural damage, and further scans were not planned for today’s evaluation. The discomfort only affects him when throwing, not when swinging a bat. Although he was scheduled to resume throwing earlier this week, those plans were delayed due to continued issues.

Following his evaluation, Steer opted for a cortisone shot, which typically requires a few days of rest. Cortisone injections can provide shoulder pain relief for up to six months. The Reds and Steer hope this treatment, along with further care, will resolve the problem. So far, the team has only confirmed that he received the injection, but manager Terry Francona may provide more details after today’s game.

Update at 7:20 PM ET:

According to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer, Francona stated that they will take as much time as needed to ensure Steer’s shoulder heals properly, which could mean starting the season on the injured list. “We said all along we’re going to do what’s right for him,” Francona said.
