Earlier this week, the Cincinnati Reds made seven roster cuts, and today, they made another move. The team announced this morning that right-handed pitcher Josh Staumont has been reassigned to minor league camp. Since Staumont was not on the 40-man roster, his departure brings the number of players in big league camp down to 53.
Staumont spent the 2024 season with the Minnesota Twins, appearing in 25 games and throwing 24.1 innings without allowing a home run. He posted a 3.70 ERA but struggled with control, issuing 14 walks while recording 18 strikeouts.
This spring, he has only pitched in one game, which took place on February 23 against the San Francisco Giants. In that outing, he tossed a hitless inning, allowing one walk and striking out two batters. Since then, he has not appeared in a game, suggesting he was either not seriously in contention for a roster spot or dealing with an unreported injury.
With the regular season just 19 days away, more roster cuts are expected in the coming days. The Reds still have twice as many players in camp as they have available roster spots, with every healthy member of the 40-man roster still present along with more than a dozen non-roster invitees.
