JUPITER, Fla. — The St. Louis Cardinals have signed right-handed reliever Phil Maton to a one-year deal, the team announced.
Maton, who was dealt from Tampa Bay to the Mets on July 9, wrapped up last season with a 3-3 record and a 3.66 ERA across 71 appearances. While with New York, he went 2-1 with a 2.52 ERA in 31 games and pitched in six postseason contests during the Mets’ run to the NL Championship Series.
Set to turn 32 on March 25, Maton recorded a career-high 18 holds last season and held opponents scoreless in 25 of his 31 outings with New York. He became a free agent after the Mets declined his $7.775 million option, opting instead for a $250,000 buyout.
The Cardinals are looking to bolster their bullpen after losing Andrew Kittredge, who signed with Baltimore as a free agent.
Over eight MLB seasons, Maton owns a 19-15 record with five saves and a 4.16 ERA in 415 games, having pitched for San Diego (2017-19), Cleveland (2019-21), Houston (2021-23), Tampa Bay (2024), and the Mets.
To make room for Maton on the 40-man roster, the Cardinals designated left-hander Bailey Horn for assignment.
