The Las Vegas Raiders have seen several defensive departures in the past week of free agency, but they retained one key piece on Monday. According to ESPN, rotational cornerback Darnay Holmes is returning on a one-year contract.
Holmes spent last season with the Raiders after signing in August, just a day after being released by the New York Giants. He appeared in 16 games, making one start and recording three passes defensed. Holmes played at least 56% of the defensive snaps in six of the final nine games of the season.
Primarily a rotational player, Holmes has experience at slot cornerback—a position of need following Nate Hobbs’ departure to the Green Bay Packers last week.
In addition to his familiarity with the Raiders’ defensive staff from last season, Holmes will also reunite with new offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, who was his head coach at UCLA for two seasons.
With Holmes re-signed, the Raiders now have 10 remaining unrestricted free agents:
- Ameer Abdullah, RB
- Zach Carter, DT
- John Jenkins, DT
- Terrace Marshall, WR
- Luke Masterson, LB
- Andrus Peat, T
- Desmond Ridder, QB (not tendered as RFA)
- Janarius Robinson, DE
- DJ Turner, WR (not tendered as RFA)
- Cody Whitehair, G
