Who says you can’t go home again? Virginia Tech head coach Mike Young took a hit when top assistant Chester Frazier left after the 2020-21 season. While Young brought in Mike Jones as a replacement, the impact wasn’t the same, and Jones departed after two years for a role at Maryland.
On Tuesday, Virginia Tech announced Frazier’s return as associate head coach. After leaving in 2021, Frazier spent three seasons at his alma mater, Illinois, before joining West Virginia’s staff under Darian DeVries in 2024. However, DeVries left after just one year to take the head coaching job at Indiana, allowing Frazier to explore new opportunities—ultimately leading him back to Blacksburg.
Frazier steps in for Christian Webster, whom Mike Young parted ways with after the season. Webster had been with Virginia Tech since 2016.
Despite multiple opportunities elsewhere, Frazier saw returning to Blacksburg as the perfect fit for his family and a chance to work with a coach he deeply respects.
“We are thrilled to welcome Chester, his wife, Sarah, and their children, Chandler, Cameron, and Courtney, back to Blacksburg,” Young said. “His passion, energy, and relentless work ethic are exactly what we need. Chester understands our program’s culture, has a strong ability to connect with players, and excels in recruiting and player development. He’s been a winner everywhere he’s been, and I’m fired up to work alongside him again.”
Frazier echoed that excitement about his return.
“I’m beyond excited to be back at Virginia Tech,” he said. “This is a special place with a passionate fan base, a strong culture, and a commitment to excellence. I’m looking forward to working with Coach Young and the staff to help bring this program back to where it belongs.”
Known for his intensity on the recruiting trail and defensive coaching expertise, Frazier could play a key role in landing experienced players through the transfer portal.
This is a significant hire for Young as he enters a crucial season. With increased financial backing expected to help Virginia Tech attract top-tier talent, adding Frazier is a strong first move in bolstering the program.
