TRADE ALERT: The Braves Agree And Sign Another Blockbuster Deal

The Atlanta Braves are giving another former Houston Astros pitcher a chance after parting ways with a World Series-winning reliever in the opening week of the 2025 season. On Tuesday, the Braves completed a trade with the Astros, hoping to improve their early-season fortunes.

In the deal, Houston is sending right-handed pitcher Rafael Montero and cash considerations to Atlanta in exchange for a player to be named later, according to the team’s X account. Montero, 34, was once a top prospect with the New York Mets. Over his career, he has posted a 22-28 record with a 4.71 ERA and 464 strikeouts in 466 1/3 innings.

Montero played a key role in the Astros’ bullpen during their 2022 championship run, finishing with a strong 2.37 ERA across 71 appearances. However, that standout performance is an outlier in what has been a generally inconsistent big-league career. The Braves are hoping a change of scenery will help him regain his form as a reliable reliever.

Braves look to Rafael Montero for some desperately-needed reinforcements

Montero, a Dominican Republic native, had a rough start to the season, giving up two runs in his first outing against the San Francisco Giants. However, he has bounced back with three scoreless innings since then. The Braves, looking to recover from a 1-8 start, have already made a few small trades in 2025, with general manager Alex Anthopoulos searching for an affordable solution.

With stars Ronald Acuña Jr. and Spencer Strider on the injured list, Atlanta needs to stay afloat. Even if the offense gets going, pitching depth remains critical. The Braves will continue experimenting with different pitchers until they find reliable options. While relying on unpredictable players is risky, at least Montero brings a World Series ring with him.

Montero is leaving a respected organization to join another, hoping to rediscover his form on the mound. A quick turnaround would be valuable for the Braves, who are currently facing the first-place Philadelphia Phillies at Truist Park.
