The St. Louis Cardinals remain one of the more intriguing teams in Major League Baseball. Despite having a roster full of talent, they’ve consistently fallen short in recent seasons. This year has been no different, as the team has started off slowly once again. As a result, there’s growing speculation that they could be active at the upcoming trade deadline. The Cardinals have several players who could attract interest from other teams, though it’s still unclear whether they’ll make any major moves.
One player to keep an eye on is pitcher Ryan Helsley. According to Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report, who recently ranked the top 10 most likely trade candidates, Helsley made the list. He’s in the final year of his contract, and unless the Cardinals work out an extension, they may be inclined to trade him—especially depending on their position in the standings. Helsley had an outstanding season last year, winning the Trevor Hoffman Award as the National League’s top reliever with a 2.04 ERA and an MLB-best 49 saves. With many teams seeking bullpen help at the deadline, the Cardinals could potentially land a pair of top-10 prospects in exchange for him.
So far this season, Helsley has maintained solid form, posting a 2.57 ERA across seven appearances. If he continues pitching at this level and the Cardinals remain out of contention, he could become a valuable trade chip. Pitching is always in high demand come July, and St. Louis may look to capitalize on that market.
