The Boston Red Sox are heating up as April comes to a close. After a rocky start to the 2025 season, the team has bounced back with seven wins in their last nine games, heading into Wednesday night’s matchup against the Seattle Mariners. It remains to be seen if Alex Cora’s squad can keep the momentum going.
While things are looking good now, the future is even brighter for the Red Sox, thanks to one of the best prospect pools in Major League Baseball. Kristian Campbell, already living up to the hype as one of Boston’s ‘Big 3’ prospects, has fans eagerly anticipating when Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer will join him in the majors.
As it turns out, one of those two has just taken a significant step closer to his MLB debut.
Top Red Sox Prospect Roman Anthony Returns to Outfield, Nears MLB Debut
Red Sox fans are eagerly awaiting Roman Anthony’s call-up as baseball’s No. 2 prospect continues to dominate in the minors. Despite his impressive performance, Boston has been cautious about promoting the outfielder as he rehabs a shoulder injury that has recently limited him to designated hitter duties.
The team is determined for Anthony to get more playing time in the outfield before his promotion, and that journey officially begins in less than 24 hours.
“After his last start in the field on April 10, Anthony is expected to return to the outfield during the WooSox doubleheader against the Mets on April 23,” reported Tommy Cassell of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette on Tuesday night.
There had been speculation about moving Anthony to first base to expedite his big-league arrival, but that idea was quickly shut down.
“We’re not putting him at first base,” the Red Sox said.

Instead, Anthony will return to the outfield tomorrow. If he’s able to handle everyday outfield duties now that his shoulder has recovered, it might not be long before he joins the Red Sox lineup. His powerful bat could provide a much-needed boost for Boston, which has seen inconsistent production from players like Triston Casas, Ceddanne Rafaela, and Rafael Devers.
While the veterans have struggled, Anthony has been exceeding expectations with Triple-A Worcester. The former 2022 second-round pick is hitting .286/.419/.543 with four home runs, four doubles, 12 RBIs, and 16 walks in 19 games (70 at-bats). Defensively, he’s been flawless, with a perfect fielding percentage and 19 putouts in the outfield.
If Anthony continues to stay healthy, his development could significantly strengthen the Red Sox lineup. With the team’s current odds tied for seventh-best at +2000 to win the 2025 World Series, his mid-season call-up could be just the spark Cora’s team needs to bring a title back to Boston. Fans are watching closely as they await Anthony’s highly anticipated MLB debut.
