The San Francisco Giants remain competitive in the NL West, trailing the division-leading Los Angeles Dodgers by just 2.5 games. With the long MLB season ahead, having depth both on the main roster and in the minors is critical. On Friday, the Giants’ front office took steps to bolster that depth.
According to beat reporter Shayna Rubin, the team is set to sign outfielder Daniel Johnson to a minor league contract. Johnson, a 29-year-old Vallejo native, has previous MLB experience with the Cleveland Guardians and Baltimore Orioles.
“Hearing the Giants are expected to sign outfielder Daniel Johnson to a minor league contract. Johnson, 29, is a Vallejo native, lefty bat, and played 36 games with CLE and BAL. Has 5 home runs in 10 games in the Mexican League this year.”
Johnson’s time in the majors was brief, having played for the Guardians in 2020 and 2021 before returning to the minors. He made a single appearance in 2024 but didn’t get much opportunity. Across 90 major league at-bats, Johnson has a .200 batting average and a .242 on-base percentage, with four home runs and five RBIs—all four homers coming in 2021.

However, he’s off to a strong start in the Mexican League, which has earned him another shot. While his primary role will be in the minors, Johnson could be a valuable depth piece if the Giants face injuries in the outfield.
The Giants will face the Colorado Rockies at 10:15 p.m. EST on Friday in the second matchup of a four-game series. San Francisco looks to bounce back after a 4-3 loss in Thursday’s opener.
