The pro football world lost a true iron man on Tuesday. Former Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jim Marshall (#70 in the photo) passed away earlier today at the age of 87.
Marshall left a lasting impression on every fan who watched him play during his years in the NFL. He played in a then league-record 282 consecutive regular-season games (270 from 1961-79 for the Vikings after coming over from the Cleveland Browns) and was a team captain for 14 seasons. He played on all four of the Vikings’ Super Bowl teams.
Marshall quickly became the standard for what the Vikings and coach Bud Grant were looking for in its players. The Vikings were able to build on that and develop the group affectionately and historically known as The Purple People Eaters.
Rest in Peace Jim Marshall.
