Peter Baltes is a renowned German musician, best known as the longtime bassist of the legendary heavy metal band Accept. His journey in the world of music began in the mid-1970s, and over the decades, Baltes solidified his reputation as one of metal’s most consistent and underrated bassists. Born on April 4, 1958, in Solingen, Germany, Baltes was part of the original wave of European heavy metal musicians who helped define the genre during its formative years. He joined Accept in 1976, following the departure of original bassist Dieter Rubach, and quickly became an integral member of the band. His melodic yet powerful bass lines provided the foundation for Accept’s signature sound, which combined the aggression of metal with the precision of classical and hard rock influences.

 

Throughout his 42-year tenure with Accept, Baltes played bass on all of the band’s first 15 studio albums, contributing not only musically but also vocally in the band’s early years. Notably, Baltes took on occasional lead vocal duties, particularly on the band’s earlier albums such as Breaker (1981), showcasing his versatility as a musician. He reprised this role again in 1996 on Predator, Accept’s 11th studio album, which saw the band experimenting with more diverse musical elements. These albums not only established the band’s legacy but also highlighted Baltes’ role in shaping their rhythmic foundation. The band responded by thanking him for his decades of dedication and soon announced his replacement: Martin Motnik, a skilled bassist best known for his work with former Scorpions guitarist Uli Jon Roth. The reunion between Baltes and Dirkschneider was met with enthusiasm by fans of classic Accept, as the two musicians had shared a strong musical chemistry since the band’s early days. With U.D.O., Baltes continues to bring his seasoned musicianship to a new generation of metal fans while honoring the legacy he helped build with Accept. His return to performing with Udo represents not just a professional collaboration but also a rekindling of a creative partnership that helped shape German heavy metal for over four decades.
