CONFIRMED: Red Wings Acquire Highly Rated $27 Million Defenseman Bolstering Squad Depth

The Detroit Red Wings are eager to end their playoff drought, and one trade proposal has them targeting a star defenseman.

Using PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool, a fan suggested a trade that would bring Rasmus Andersson from the Calgary Flames to the Red Wings.

Red Wings acquire:

Rasmus Andersson, third-round selection in 2025

Flames acquire:

2025 first-round selection
seventh-round selection in 2025
In exchange for Andersson, the Red Wings would have to forfeit their first-round pick in order to strengthen their blue line. In the meantime, Calgary receives a first-round selection to aid in the possibility of a rebuild.

The fifth year of Andersson’s six-year, $27.3 million contract is about to begin. The defenseman is expected to be the Red Wings’ second-pairing right-shot defenseman, behind league-leading defenseman Mortiz Seider.

Andersson skated in 78 games during the previous season, scoring 39 points with 9 goals and 30 assists. Throughout his eight-year career, he skated in 455 games for the Flames, tallying 200 points with 36 goals and 164 assists.

Red Wings Hoping to Compete for Playoff Spot

The Detroit Red Wings have been in a rebuilding phase since their last playoff appearance in the 2015-16 season, focusing on getting younger and developing their roster. With a promising core that includes Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond, GM Steve Yzerman believes the team is now poised to compete for a playoff spot.

“I think we’re in with that group of teams that has a chance to compete for the playoffs,” Yzerman stated. “If we stay healthy, if our goaltending is good, and if players exceed expectations, we might get in. Or you might just miss by a point in the last game of the season. That’s the fine line of it all. When I look at the roster today compared to last year’s group, it’s a little bit different. It might be a better fit in terms of roles for players where they are on the roster today.”

During the offseason, Detroit made several key additions, signing Cam Talbot, Vladimir Tarasenko, Tyler Motte, and Erik Gustafsson. The Red Wings also re-signed Patrick Kane to bring veteran leadership to their young team.

Detroit will begin its 2024-25 NHL season at home on October 10 against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

It’s difficult to find the correct words these days. You played hockey like a pro. However, one of my best friends, Johnny, will always be by my side. Even if we hadn’t spoken in a day or a week, we would always know where to find each other, Andersson wrote.

We all adore you, Johnny, and there hasn’t been a dry eye in the Andersson home today. glancing back at this photo while shedding a tear or two. The following morning, we were laughing about this with severe hangovers. We love you, Meredith Noa and Johnny Jr., and we’re always here for you,” Andersson continued.

At thirty-one, Gaudreau was a seven-time NHL All Star.
