Steph Curry has spent his entire career with the Golden State Warriors, leading them to four NBA championships and solidifying his status as the greatest shooter in league history. His impact has transformed the Warriors into one of the NBA’s most prominent franchises. Now, at 36, Curry faces questions about his future with the team.
In a recent appearance on “Today,” Curry expressed his desire to retire with the Warriors but stopped short of making any guarantees. He emphasized that, while he hopes to stay in the Bay Area, winning remains his top priority.
“Certainly, I hope so,” Curry remarked. “I’m about to enter my sixteenth year and have always stated that my objective is to end my career with the same organization that has watched me rise through the ranks and achieve incredible feats with Draymond. I know Klay isn’t with us anymore, but I just want to keep winning.”
The Warriors find themselves in a transitional phase. Earlier this summer, they lost longtime star Klay Thompson, who signed with the Dallas Mavericks in free agency. The team’s front office has been navigating two conflicting paths—developing young talent while still trying to compete at a high level. This balancing act contributed to their disappointing season, where they missed the playoffs after losing to the Sacramento Kings in the play-in tournament.
Over the summer, the Warriors aggressively pursued a second All-Star to pair with Steph Curry but came up short. Attempts to secure Paul George from the L.A. Clippers in a sign-and-trade and to acquire Lauri Markkanen from the Utah Jazz both failed.
Despite these setbacks, the Warriors have plenty of trade assets, keeping them just one move away from returning to contention. This should provide Curry with enough incentive to remain in the Bay Area during the twilight of his career. However, if the front office drags its feet in making those moves, they risk wasting more of Curry’s remaining years. While Curry hasn’t explicitly demanded it, his recent comments are subtly increasing the pressure on the organization to secure him another All-Star teammate.
