Chris Canty, a former NFL defensive lineman and ESPN Radio host, recently discussed why he thinks Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes needs to have a better 2025 season in order to be among the best at his position.

The interlocking “KC” in the arrowhead helmet logo has long been the crowning element of their timeless appearance. It’s that simple. Indeed, it has been effective for them in recent years, and wearing their 1960s Dallas Texans jerseys isn’t exactly logical. Their creative space is also constrained by their slightly troublesome team name. Although it seems like there is some leeway, owner Clark Hunt hasn’t been amenable to it. Hell, perhaps he is correct. For the lone team in the league without a throwback or alternate option, nobody is pleading for gold trousers or jerseys if I were establishing a team, I would pick Patrick Mahomes over everyone else because he has a track record of winning and, in my opinion, at quarterback.
They’re making it to the final rounds, not the Super Bowl, so people don’t care. Canty stated, “If the Kansas City Chiefs end up out of the Super Bowl championship games and Mahomes has fewer than 30 touchdown passes, people don’t want to talk because they’re going on deep playoff runs.” His turnovers are similar to what we observed. We’re talking about him committing 15 to 20 turnovers, and then suddenly it will be determined who the NFL’s top quarterback is. Now listen, if I were establishing a team, I would pick Patrick Mahomes over everyone else because he has a track record of winning and, in my opinion, at quarterback.
In Week 1 of this fall, Simmons should be guarding Patrick Mahomes’ blindside if he is healthy. Though he should be more of an insurance policy in case the youngster isn’t ready to go than a full-time starter, the Chiefs did sign Jaylon Moore in free agency to potentially fill that position. If not for the season-ending knee injury last fall, Simmons may have been the highest-drafted offensive lineman, while the veteran only made 12 starts in his 55 career games in San Francisco. Fortunately, on June 19, Andy Reid said that the first-round selection would fully participate in training camp.
Although many of the greatest quarterbacks have played their best ball at that time, Mahomes will be approaching the first half of his 30s. Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson have yet to demonstrate their ability to defeat Mahomes on the biggest stage, and Joe Burrow’s squad isn’t good enough going into the late 2020s. Although he has only played in one NFL season, Jayden Daniels of the Washington Commanders is an intriguing candidate given his remarkable rookie campaign.
After dealing away Joe Thuney, Kansas City signed Jaylon Moore and selected Josh Simmons to add some competition along their offensive line. Kingsley Suamataia is now filling Thuney’s left guard position. The Chiefs ought to provide competition in that position, at the absolute least. If the Chiefs hadn’t demonstrated a willingness to make minimal investments in the position due to Clyde Edwards-Helaire’s failure, running back would have been another option. The final position in the top three is defensive tackle.
