The Chargers’ star offensive lineman Rashawn Slater suffered a severe injury, tearing his patellar tendon during practice, just days after signing a massive four-year, $114 million contract extension with $92 million guaranteed. This injury will cause him to miss the entire 2025 season and requires surgery.
Slater’s injury occurred during a team drill where he collapsed and was immediately carted off the field. His teammates showed strong support as he left practice. The timing is especially harsh since this contract made him the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history by average annual value.

Losing Slater is a major setback for the Chargers, who now must adjust their offensive line strategy. Potential shifts include moving Joe Alt to left tackle and Trey Pipkins III to right tackle. The team may also explore signing veteran backups to address the gap left by Slater’s absence.
Despite the injury, Slater’s guaranteed contract secures his financial future, though he faces a challenging rehabilitation process ahead.
