BREAKING: Knicks Reportedly Land Unexpected Deal Of A Top Notch Quality Center

The New York Knicks have strong talent throughout their roster, but they’re far from complete due to a significant lack of depth at center. The challenge of replacing Isaiah Hartenstein has been one of the most talked-about issues surrounding the team this offseason. With the regular season approaching, a trade before or during the season remains a likely option.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst says that the Knicks could make a move for Robert Williams III

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst has hinted that the New York Knicks may closely follow Portland Trail Blazers center Robert Williams III. Williams, who missed most of last season after knee surgery, could be a target for teams in need of a center. Windhorst noted, “Any team looking for a center is going to watch Robert Williams closely this year,” (via KnicksMuse on X). With the Trail Blazers already having drafted Donovan Clingan and Deandre Ayton—who is likely difficult to trade—Williams’ role on the team is uncertain, making him a potential target for the Knicks.

Much like Mitchell Robinson, New York’s current starting center, Williams is an elite defender but has struggled with injuries, playing more than 60 games only once in his career. That season, 2021-22, saw him help the Boston Celtics reach the NBA Finals, where he averaged 2.2 blocks per game, second only to Jaren Jackson Jr. of the Memphis Grizzlies.

Williams would be a great fit with the Knicks

Injuries are notoriously unpredictable, so trading for Robert Williams would be a high-risk, high-reward move for the Knicks, given his extensive injury history. However, he would address several concerns for the team by providing a solid backup center to round out their roster.

The Knicks are already a strong defensive unit with Mitchell Robinson, OG Anunoby, and Mikal Bridges in the starting lineup. Adding Williams would bring an All-Defense caliber player to their second unit, and it’s likely he would thrive under head coach Tom Thibodeau, who emphasizes defense.

Although there are no signs that the Knicks and Trail Blazers are currently engaged in talks about Williams, as the season approaches, it wouldn’t be surprising if New York starts exploring his trade value.
