REPORT: Warriors Coach Confirms Suprise Reason For The Departure Of key Star

The Dallas Mavericks made a major move this offseason by signing Klay Thompson away from the Golden State Warriors on a 3-year, $50 million contract. While it will feel odd for many NBA fans to see Thompson in a different jersey, it may be even more surreal for his former coaches.

Mark Jackson, Thompson’s first NBA head coach from 2011 to 2014, recently shared his thoughts on the move during an appearance on “SWAYS UNIVERSE.” Jackson reflected on Thompson’s departure from the Warriors and how the Mavericks stand to benefit from the addition.

“Ideally, Klay Thompson finishes his career with the Golden State Warriors, but you know how this business works,” Jackson explained. “Loyalty only flows in one direction, and that’s not a criticism of the Warriors—it’s just the nature of sports. Not everyone gets a farewell deal like Derek Jeter. In hindsight, maybe they should have parted ways sooner, despite his greatness.

“Klay is going to be just fine, and it’s a fantastic pickup for the Mavericks. It’s unfortunate that he didn’t finish his career in Golden State, but that’s life. I’m proud of Klay because when we drafted him—he’ll tell you this himself—I’m proud as both his coach and friend.”

The Mavericks are banking on Thompson being the final piece to help them capture an NBA championship. Their loss to the Boston Celtics in last year’s NBA Finals highlighted a need for improved perimeter shooting, something Thompson can still deliver at a high level.

Although Thompson had a down year by his standards, averaging 17.9 PPG on 38.7% from three-point range, he remains sixth all-time in NBA history for most made three-pointers. His presence on the Mavericks should provide more space for Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving to thrive.
