The New York Knicks signed Marcus Morris to an Exhibit 9 contract, which is effectively a training camp agreement. The agreement will change to a standard non-guaranteed contract if the team decides to maintain Morris.
Marcus Morris, who has played for eight different NBA teams over his career, is returning to one of them. The New York Knicks announced that Morris has signed an Exhibit 9 contract with the franchise.
The 35-year-old forward began the previous season with the Philadelphia 76ers and was traded mid-season to the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he averaged 6.4 points and 2.7 rebounds per game.
An Exhibit 9 deal is essentially a training camp contract. It’s a one-year, non-guaranteed agreement that, if the player makes the team, converts into a regular non-guaranteed contract and counts against the salary cap and luxury tax. If the team doesn’t offer a guaranteed contract by January 10th, the deal automatically becomes guaranteed.
Exhibit 9 contracts also provide injury protection, as teams must pay $15,000 to players who suffer injuries while on the contract.
