The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox were involved in controversy over the weekend. On Saturday, it seemed the Red Sox retaliated by throwing at Yankees slugger Aaron Judge, following Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole hitting and intentionally walking Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers in back-to-back at-bats.
After the game, Red Sox manager Alex Cora hinted that hitting Judge might have been intentional, saying, “It was closed yesterday around the sixth inning. We had our chance. It didn’t happen.” This led Major League Baseball to investigate whether the Red Sox had intentionally targeted Judge.
MLB decided not to punish Cora. Before Tuesday’s game against the Seattle Mariners, Yankees manager Aaron Boone commented on the situation, as reported by Bryan Hoch of MLB.com:
“I feel like we’re past this weekend,” Boone said. “Chances are, we’re not going to play them anymore this year. We’ve got too much important stuff going on to really get caught up in that.”
Boone’s sentiment is understandable. After the Red Sox lost three out of four games to the Yankees and another game on Tuesday, they now trail the Minnesota Twins by five games for the final American League Wild Card spot. Boone is choosing to focus on his own team’s success and postseason goals rather than fueling further conflict.
