SET BACK: “From Bust to Breakout? Dolphins Coach Talks Up Former Jets QB’s Potential Revival”

The backup quarterback position for the Miami Dolphins holds significant importance, given Tua Tagovailoa’s history of head injuries over his five-year career, including one that kept him out for four games in 2024. Head coach Mike McDaniel took a careful approach to select the Dolphins’ No. 2 quarterback for 2025. On March 10, that approach led to the signing of Zach Wilson to a one-year, $10 million contract.

McDaniel explained, “It’s not an exact science, but we felt he was the best choice for us. He was a targeted pick, and we believe this is a move that will improve the Dolphins. We’re excited to see how he embraces this opportunity.”

Wilson, selected as the second overall pick by the New York Jets in the 2021 draft, struggled to adjust to professional football despite a standout career at BYU. After the Jets released him following the 2023 season, he moved to Denver to back up rookie Bo Nix but didn’t see any action in the 2024 season. McDaniel acknowledged that Wilson faced challenges when transitioning to an NFL pocket, especially as a high-profile pick in the demanding New York market.

“This was something we had been thinking about for a long time,” McDaniel shared. “Everyone has different circumstances. I watched all his college games, and he was a tremendous talent. But I believe he never had enough reps in an NFL pocket. At BYU, he was throwing from 10 or 11 yards deep, which is very different from the pressure of the NFL pocket. I think he’s ready to grow and adjust to the next level.”

“To me, that’s really powerful because not many people understand what it’s like to be drafted high in New York City. So, seeing his resilience and how he’s processed the whole situation is impressive. It’s like with anything in life—when you face adversity, it can either become a source of strength and growth or something that defines you and holds you back.”
