After a disappointing season, the St. Louis Cardinals are open to making substantial changes, which could include trading their star third baseman.
According to Derrick Goold of the *St. Louis Post-Dispatch*, the Cardinals plan to gauge league-wide interest in Nolan Arenado. However, Arenado’s contract includes a no-trade clause, meaning the Cardinals would need his approval to finalize any trade. The team aims to gather enough information to present Arenado with potential options over the coming weeks.
One challenge is Arenado’s contract, which has three years remaining, along with deferred payments from his time with the Colorado Rockies.
An eight-time All-Star, Arenado has been one of the league’s premier third basemen, but his offensive numbers dipped in 2024. His 16 home runs were his lowest in a full season since his rookie year, though he maintained a .272 average, raising concerns about his declining power.
Following an underwhelming 83-79 season, the Cardinals appear ready to reshape their roster. Moving Arenado could signal a shift toward a younger lineup for 2025.
